Florida Virtual School Students Outperform State Averages in End-of-Course Exams

Florida Virtual School (FLVS) students beat the state average in End-of-Course (EOC) exams taken by Florida students in spring, 2015. The benchmark tests measure how well students have mastered course material. As the state requires more EOC assessments, students in FLVS part-time and full-time programs continue to surpass the average set by students in traditional schools.

“FLVS continues to prove that online education not only offers schools and students customized choices, but that learning virtually can be highly effective,” said Jodi Marshall, executive vice president of FLVS Business and School Solutions. “We are so proud of our students, teachers, and staff for this amazing accomplishment.”

FLVS part-time students performed higher than the state average on the Biology 1 EOC assessment by four percent. They also outperformed the state average by 16 percent on the Civics EOC assessment and 10 percent on the U.S. History EOC assessment. Full-time FLVS students also surpassed the state average on these EOC assessments. They scored 14 percent higher than the state average on the Biology 1 EOC assessment, 13 percent higher on the Civics EOC assessment, and 18 percent higher on the U.S. History EOC assessment.

FLVS is an established leader in developing and providing virtual kindergarten through 12th grade education solutions to students all over Florida, the U.S., and the world. A nationally recognized e-learning model and recipient of numerous awards, FLVS was founded in 1997 and was the country's first, statewide Internet-based public high school. Today, FLVS provides a variety of custom solutions for schools and districts to meet student needs. For more information, visit https://www.flvs.net.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the fall term, I ask you to take a moment to turn off the computer (yes, I actually wrote that) and literally move! This month I share a project with you, which my fellow classmates and I created in an effort towards improving our health, while benefiting others along the way. Let's get our students to MOVE! And move with a PURPOSE!

Mother Theresa once said, “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.”

My classmates and I live 971 miles apart but yet we worked collaboratively using technologies online. Our goal was to empower others to increase their activity, increase those endorphins, improve their performance and their lives! Synchronously, we worked “face-to-face” using Google Hangouts, Google Docs, Google Present, and Weebly. Our biggest find was actually discovered by one of my students. Twoodo is a Web 2.0 planning tool designed to organize teams with useful accountability measures. Since educators around the nation are using Twitter for professional development, hashtags are also a part of the ingenious components embedded within Twoodo.

So enjoy these important tools to engage your students. Check out our final project and let us know how you (and your students) are MOVING throughout the fall: http://runningwithapurpose.weebly.com/!

Happy fall, beautiful people!
